A large number of the population in Korea are exposed to serious air pollution. Plus, researchers are emphasizing the correlation between fine dust pollution and depression, which silently threatens public health.UNCOVER is a book designed to enhance awareness of fine dust problems in Korea.
Uncover The Forgotten.
UNCOVER is a user-participating collection of poems. As the reader peels away 3 layers of dust graphics, they can read the poem about the beauty of the sky. This implies that the forgotten beautiful sky can only be restored with people’s awareness.
UNCOVER takes a personal and emotional perspective focusing on the negative feeling caused by fine dust, instead of the social and structural approach that has been universally accepted.
Visualizing The
Invisible
We used real-time fine dust data provided by The Ministry of Environment of Korea (www.airkorea.or.kr) as a main graphic for the book. Depending on the concentration, the data is divided into three stages: 15-35㎍/㎥, 36-75㎍/㎥, and 76-500㎍/㎥. Then, we converted the data into irregular vector dots using a computer program. We printed the dots on translucent papers, covering the Korean literature works.
What We Have
Forgotten
Collected 20 passages are sharing one theme, the aesthetic of the sky. They are selected among the much-loved Korean literature works, only from those whose copyright has expired.
Carefully Selected
Materials
Papers were carefully chosen for the right tone of the book. Selected papers share a soft texture and their natural tone relieves eye fatigue.
Especially, the paper used on the cover is Loop Particle paper, which is an eco - friendly paper certified by FSC(Forest Stewardship Council). For the body paper, we used Munken Print, which is also an eco - friendly uncoated paper.
Structure Follows
Function
The clamshell box structure encourages a reader to respect both cultural heritage and nature, treating it as something to protect and preserve.
