Ian’s name card

I am Ian Lin, and this is my name card.
This work is a final project of fundamental designing class in NCTU. The goal is to design a name card of ourselves and make our best to introduce ourselves to people.

Initially, I found it really hard to think of a main idea to describe myself from head to toe. I think lots of people has the same problem. We couldn’t use a simple thing to represent an individual, especially when trying to convey the complexity of his personality traits.

Basically, we make name cards to show our business status or give out our information, but that’s not my goal this time. What I really want to do is to tell a story, and do my best to make this name card somehow represents me.
First, I was thinking of using some symbols to stand for my rationality and responsibility, and then an idea popped up in my mind, “I do like calculus very much! Why don’t I use some symbol from calculus?”
So I started to design my name using calculus's operating symbols.

This is the original layout of the first and the second word of my name.
And this is the first version of my design, it is made of a sign of division, multiply, and radical, a pair of bracket,  an integral symbol, an absolute-value sign, and the number, 2.
However, I feel that this design intend to convey to much information, cutting down the readability on the contrary.
So I reduce the quantity of symbols, and try to make three words in my name follow the same design language by aligning.
As I'm undergoing the design process, I started to think about the emotion I would like to add to this work.
Based on my cognition to myself, I still remain some childishness, and I cherish it, while I also want to convey the meditative of my personality, so I decided to set the emotion of this work as childish, vibrant but also meditative.

And this is the final design.
I use the calculation of calculus problem as the background, to show my enthusiasm for calculus, rigor and carefulness.
The shape and the graffiti represent childishness. I especially want to covey the idea of child hoping to grow up by the graffiti. When we were young, we used to pretend that we were a grown-up, so I use the graffiti in place of my personal information, to convey the voice of the kid inside my body hoping to grow up.

To make it more vibrant, I also use two color for the front and the back side.
And that's all for this project, thanks for reading.
