UKIYO
Ukiyo (浮世, "floating, fleeting, or transient world") describes the urban lifestyle, especially the pleasure-seeking aspects, of the Edo-period Japan (1600–1867).
The term ukiyo (when meaning the Floating World) is also an ironic allusion to the homophone ukiyo (憂き世, "Sorrowful World"), shorthand for the endless cycle of rebirth, life, suffering, death, and rebirth from which Buddhists seek to escape.

As a graphic design student I became increasingly critical on the ubiquity of media. My stay in Tokyo further cemented the negatives I found within consumer culture. The photography started as a way to reflect upon the world around me. But eventually my project ended as a reflection on myself as an individual within this world.
A life devoid of meaning, surely that means we have to find meaning within our existence itself. But in the mean time we are detached from whom we really are. The omnipresence of advertisements clouds our ability to perceive our true needs. Conformity restrains our freedom even further. We lose not only ourselves, but also our means of escaping the estrangement and absurdities found in contemporary life.
